{"id":194624,"date":"2026-02-10T20:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T15:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/?p=194624"},"modified":"2026-02-10T20:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T15:50:09","slug":"tarigami-criticizes-india-us-trade-deal-warns-of-heavy-blow-to-iiojk-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/2026\/02\/10\/tarigami-criticizes-india-us-trade-deal-warns-of-heavy-blow-to-iiojk-economy.html","title":{"rendered":"Tarigami criticizes India-US trade deal, warns of heavy blow to IIOJK economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-194626\" src=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-10-at-7.59.46-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-10-at-7.59.46-PM.png 462w, https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-10-at-7.59.46-PM-390x190.png 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/>Jammu: Kashmiri lawmaker and CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has criticized the recent India-US trade deal, warning it would severely harm India\u2019s agricultural sector and deal a heavy blow to the economy of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).<\/p>\n<p>According to Kashmir Media Service, participating in the discussion on the Budget in the IIOJK Assembly, Tarigami, also leader of the Apple Farmers Federation of India, said the deal would devastate regional economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been facing problems in apple cultivation due to lack of marketing facilities and climatic challenges,\u201d Tarigami said. \u201cFarmers are already in distress, and this agreement will be a huge setback for apple and tree nut growers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a state like Jammu and Kashmir, where there are no other economic avenues such as industry, the only source of income was cultivation of apples and dry fruits,\u201d Tarigami added. \u201cThe Union government does not care about farmers here and is working for their masters in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the agreement compromised India\u2019s sovereignty by favouring American interests while exposing Indian farmers \u2014 especially apple, peanut, and soyabean growers \u2014 to unfair competition without adequate safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder this deal, all American goods, including apples, peanuts (soyabean) and other agricultural products, will enter India at zero tariff, while Indian goods will continue to face 18 per cent tariff in the US. It is clear who stands to gain and who stands to lose. This trade deal is bound to have a severe adverse impact on our agricultural sector,\u201d he said.
