New Delhi: The number of Indian students travelling abroad for higher education has steadily declined over the past three years, according to data shared by the Ministry of Education in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, information provided by Indian Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar to the house said, over 9.08 lakh Indians went overseas for studies in 2023, a figure that fell to 7.7 lakh in 2024 and further to 6.26 lakh in 2025. The data is based on records from the Indian Home Ministry\u2019s Bureau of Immigration (BoI) for the period 2023 to 2025.<\/p>\n
Majumdar said that studying abroad is a matter of personal choice, influenced by factors such as affordability, access to loans, aptitude for specific fields, and exposure to foreign societies.<\/p>\n
Observers note that the decline in Indian students going abroad is not solely due to domestic reforms or cost factors. Rising incidents of discrimination, harassment, and attacks against Indians in foreign countries, linked to the aggressive Hindutva-driven politics of the Modi regime, have created a hostile environment for Indian students overseas. Analysts warn that the growing association of Indian citizens with extremist political agendas has made universities and societies abroad wary, prompting parents and students to reconsider international study options.
