Lucknow: A planned interfaith wedding between Shahvez Rana, a Muslim man, and Akansha Gautam, a Buddhist woman, was disrupted in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, following a Hindutva-inspired compliant under the state\u2019s anti-conversion law.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, Rana has been booked and an FIR registered at the Ganga Nagar police station after Akanksha\u2019s uncle, Premchand Gautam, alleged that Rana misrepresented his identity as \u201cSahil\u201d in the wedding card. He claimed Rana \u201cdeceived her to grab property and conspired to marry her through manipulation.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, the bride and her mother have dismissed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated.<\/p>\n
The controversy intensified after members of Hindutva organisations accompanied the complainant to the police station and publicly alleged that the case was one of \u201clove jihad,\u201d a Hindutva conspiracy theory that claims Muslim men lure Hindu women into relationships in order to convert them to Islam.<\/p>\n
Akanksha Gautam told the media, \u201cLove jihad will only happen as long as it\u2019s a Hindu-Muslim matter. I\u2019m not even a Hindu, I\u2019m a Buddhist. I am marrying Shahvez of my own free will. My uncle is interfering because of a property dispute since my father\u2019s death three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her mother, Lata Rani, added, \u201cWe know the boy\u2019s entire family. There is no case of love jihad. My brother-in-law\u2019s allegations are baseless.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Hindutva group, Hindu Suraksha Sangathan, pressured the owner of the resort where the wedding was to be held to cancel the event. Its president, Sachin Sirohi, threatened to oppose the wedding irrespective of the venue.<\/p>\n
Responding, Akanksha said, \u201cSirohi has no authority to interfere in my personal decision,\u201d while her mother emphasized the marriage is \u201cwithin the framework of the Indian Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
