New Delhi: Amid a rising trend of student suicides in India, with over 10,000 cases reported annually, a 19-year-old Computer Engineering student took his own life in BJP-ruled Haryana.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased, identified as Angod Shiva, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra district on Monday, Indian police said. He was a first-semester student pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and was staying in a hostel on campus. No suicide note was found at the scene, police added.<\/p>\n
Student suicides in India are rising, with over 10,000 cases reported annually, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh record the highest numbers, with youth aged 15\u201324 at greatest risk. Major contributing factors include immense academic pressure, examination failure, and mental health challenges.<\/p>\n
India has one of the world\u2019s highest youth suicide rates, with 35% of all suicides occurring in the 15\u201324 age group. Data shows a consistent rise in student suicides, from 9,478 cases in 2016 to 10,159 in 2018. While Haryana\u2019s figures follow national trends, Maharashtra reported the highest number of student suicides (1,834), followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n
From 1995 to 2019, over 170,000 students in India lost their lives to suicide, highlighting a systemic crisis marked by intense competition for limited seats in prestigious institutions, high-stakes exams, and insufficient support systems for students facing stress, anxiety, and depression, the reports said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
