On average, around 45,000 women and girls disappeared each year. For six consecutive years, nearly 130 women and girls went missing daily, a pattern that raises concerns about systemic failure.

The government claimed that 235,977 women and children have been traced so far. However, 68,334 women and girls remain unaccounted for, leaving thousands of families in prolonged anguish, uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.

Year-wise data further highlights the crisis: more than 30,000 women went missing in 2020, 39,000 in 2021, 40,000 in 2023, and 31,000 in 2025. In the current year alone, over 1,000 cases have already been reported. The highest numbers have emerged from major urban centers such as Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Ujjain, while several tribal districts have also recorded disturbing trends.

In his written response, the Chief Minister acknowledged that when thousands of women are missing, it cannot be viewed merely as a law and order issue but reflects a broader institutional failure. He stressed that such cases must not be treated as routine disappearances and instead require accountability and transparency at the highest level.

Bhopal: In a deeply troubling reflection of women’s safety in Modi’s India, approximately 130 women and girls go missing every day in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
