The deceased included around 100 pilgrims who perished in separate tragedies triggered by cloudbursts and landslides en route to the Machail Mata shrine in Kishtwar and the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district in August last year.

A catastrophic cloudburst struck Chisoti village in Kishtwar on August 14, killing 63 people, injuring dozens and leaving 30 missing. Days later, on August 26, a landslide caused by incessant rains along the Vaishno Devi route claimed 32 lives and injured 20 others.

The official data shows that Jammu region bore the brunt of the destruction, with 3,304 houses fully damaged, 1,818 severely damaged and 11,622 partially damaged. In addition, 3,531 huts and cattle sheds were destroyed, 1,461 livestock perished and 1,035 tin sheds were lost. In Kashmir valley, 12 houses were fully damaged, 44 severely damaged and 597 partially damaged, along with damage to 71 huts and cattle sheds and the loss of 54 livestock.

Despite official claims of fund releases, affected families in several districts continue to complain of authorities’ lack of interest in compensation rehabilitation. Many victims, particularly in remote and hilly areas, are still living in temporary shelters or partially damaged homes, struggling to rebuild their lives amid harsh weather conditions.

Residents and social activists have criticized the authorities for bureaucratic apathy and a disproportionate focus on administrative formalities rather than timely ground-level relief. They say while figures and allocations are repeatedly highlighted in official statements, the suffering families remain entangled in procedural hurdles, awaiting meaningful support and long-term rehabilitation.

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, at least 152 people lost their lives, 179 were injured and nearly 21,000 structures—mostly residential houses—were damaged due to devastating rain fury in 2025, official data revealed.
