Jammu: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, President of the National Conference and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when an armed man opened fire at him during a wedding ceremony in Jammu. The incident has raised serious concerns over the security arrangements provided to local politicians in the occupied territory.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, 88-year-old Farooq Abdullah was attending a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu when a pistol-wielding man managed to approach him and fired a shot. The bullet, however, missed its target. Officials admitted that the attack could have proved fatal.<\/p>\n

The assailant was identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, who was immediately taken into custody at the scene along with the pistol used in the attack. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n

The 62-year-old Jamwal later claimed that he had been waiting for an opportunity to attack Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years. He is reportedly related to the family hosting the wedding ceremony attended by the National Conference leader. Some reports also suggested that Jamwal was intoxicated at the time of the shooting.<\/p>\n

Besides Farooq Abdullah, several political figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, were present at the event. Although no one was injured, the firing triggered panic among the guests attending the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, IIOJK Chief Minister and Farooq Abdullah\u2019s son, Omar Abdullah, expressed serious concern over the incident and questioned how the attacker managed to get so close to his father despite the Z-Plus security cover provided to him.<\/p>\n

Senior NC leader and Indian parliament member from Srinagar, Agha Ruhullah Mehdi strongly condemned the incident, describing the firing at the wedding function as reprehensible. He said the episode was deeply concerning and stressed that those responsible must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
