{"id":196628,"date":"2026-03-14T12:43:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T07:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/?p=196628"},"modified":"2026-03-14T12:49:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T07:49:30","slug":"bjp-govt-revokes-detention-of-ladakh-activist-sonam-wangchuk-after-six-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/2026\/03\/14\/bjp-govt-revokes-detention-of-ladakh-activist-sonam-wangchuk-after-six-months.html","title":{"rendered":"BJP govt revokes detention of Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk after six months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-193198\" src=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/01\/wanguch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Srinagar: The BJP-led Indian government has decided to revoke the illegal detention of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk was taken into custody and lodged in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan state, under the draconian National Security Act (NSA), on September 26 last year, two days after massive protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrations in Leh district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Ladakh region turned deadly with Indian forces resorted to indiscriminate firing on peaceful protesters, killing four civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Saturday that Wangchuk\u2019s detention had been revoked.<\/p>\n<p>Wangchuk\u2019s detention had been widely condemned by Ladakhis, human rights activists, and civil society groups, who described it as an attempt to silence dissent and curb peaceful advocacy. Many had demanded his immediate release, highlighting his work on environmental and social issues in Ladakh.
