New Delhi: Pakistan\u2019s emerging role as a mediator in the current Iran war has rattled India, prompting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to make disparaging remarks about Islamabad. The comments come after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government came under fire over what the opposition described as the country\u2019s isolation after siding with Israel ahead of the war.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, at an all-party meeting convened to discuss the West Asia crisis, Jaishankar dismissed Pakistan\u2019s mediation efforts, saying India does not see itself as a \u201cdalaal\u201d (broker) like its neighbor. \u201cThere is nothing new in Pakistan\u2019s mediation efforts, as that country has been \u2018used\u2019 by the US since 1981,\u201d Jaishankar said.<\/p>\n
The comments follow sharp domestic criticism of Modi\u2019s visit to Israel last month, which opposition parties described as a betrayal of India\u2019s long-standing foreign policy and a demonstration of \u201cmoral cowardice\u201d amid intense global scrutiny of Israeli actions.<\/p>\n
