New Delhi: In India, the Congress party has termed Pakistan\u2019s role in brokering a ceasefire between the United States and Iran as a serious setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s foreign policy.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a statement, criticised the Indian government\u2019s diplomatic approach, saying Pakistan\u2019s involvement in facilitating the truce reflects poorly on New Delhi\u2019s global standing.<\/p>\n
The remarks came after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to attacks on Iran and accepted parts of Tehran\u2019s proposed framework, while Iran agreed to limited passage through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Pakistan hosted talks between the two sides and played a key role in facilitating the ceasefire, which is being viewed globally as a step towards de-escalation.<\/p>\n
Jairam Ramesh said the entire world would cautiously welcome the two-week ceasefire, but added that Pakistan\u2019s role in the process was a \u201csevere setback to both the substance and style\u201d of Modi\u2019s diplomacy. He also criticised what he described as the Indian government\u2019s silence on Israel\u2019s actions in West Asia and statements made by Donald Trump during the conflict.<\/p>\n
Taking a swipe at Narendra Modi, he said the prime minister\u2019s image as a \u201cself-styled Vishwaguru\u201d stands exposed in light of recent developments. He maintained that India\u2019s long-standing policy of isolating Pakistan internationally has not succeeded.<\/p>\n
The Congress leader contrasted the current approach with the diplomatic strategy adopted during the tenure of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, particularly after the Mumbai attacks.<\/p>\n
