Srinagar: Srinagar-based photojournalist Yasir Iqbal has won the World Press Photo Contest 2026 in the West, Central and South Asia \u2013 Singles category for his compelling image depicting grief in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the winning photograph, titled \u201cA Daughter\u2019s Grief in Kashmir,\u201d captures 21-year-old Sanam Bashir collapsing in sorrow during her mother\u2019s funeral in Uri, Baramulla. Her mother, Nargis Begum (45), died due to shrapnel injuries after a mortar shell hit while the family was fleeing their home on May 9, 2025.<\/p>\n
The image was published on the cover of Outlook Magazine\u2019s May 21, 2025 edition, titled \u201cIs It War?\u201d, and reflects the human toll of a brief but intense escalation between India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n
In a post on X, Outlook congratulated Iqbal, stating that the issue examined a four-day standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours that brought them close to open conflict. The escalation followed Indian unprovoked strikes in Pakistan after the Pahalgam false flag operation.<\/p>\n
Outlook also noted that parts of Indian television media amplified the conflict with highly dramatized coverage and intense studio debates during the crisis period.<\/p>\n
The World Press Photo jury praised Iqbal\u2019s work for its emotional depth and storytelling strength, highlighting the human suffering behind geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n
