New Delhi: The Congress party has criticized the Modi government’s proposed delimitation exercise, linked to the implementation of the women’s reservation law, as an attempt to create a divide between northern and southern states.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a press conference, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said delimitation must reflect equitable representation and not be treated as a purely arithmetic exercise.<\/p>\n

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi stated that the reported delimitation proposal raises serious constitutional concerns and could have far-reaching political consequences. She emphasized that any increase in the Lok Sabha strength must be politically equitable and not solely based on numerical calculations.<\/p>\n

The Congress is concerned that the proposed framework could reduce parliamentary representation of states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, which have controlled population growth and performed better on human development indicators.
