He was attacked by individuals linked to Hindutva groups, including BJP, RSS and Bajrang Dal, under the pretext of so-called ‘gau raksha’ (cow protection).

During the assault, Tanveer reportedly attempted to flee but went missing near Makarkote along the Srinagar–Jammu highway in the Ramsoo area. His body was later recovered from Nallah Bishlari near the same location, indicating that he had been murdered and dumped there by the assailants. Some reports also suggest he jumped into the stream while escaping, after which he drowned. The deceased was the sole breadwinner for his mother and four sisters. Police have registered a case at Ramsoo police station.

Following the incident, large-scale protests erupted as people, including women and children, blocked the Srinagar–Jammu highway in Ramban on Monday. A complete shutdown was also observed across the district.

Protesters are demanding strict action against those involved, transparency in the investigation, and capital punishment for the perpetrators, while expressing anger over repeated similar incidents in the region.

Political leaders across party lines condemned the killing. National Conference leader and Indian parliament member from Srinagar, Ruhullah Mehdi, said it was the fourth such incident in Ramban, adding, “If the accused were Muslim, they’d already be booked under UAPA with a terrorist tag overnight. Instead, the softer term ‘cow vigilantes’ is used, we will call them what they are: terrorists.”

Banihal MLA Sajjad Shaheen said Tanveer’s vehicle was pelted with stones before he was forcibly pulled out and assaulted. He added that Tanveer had valid documents for transporting cattle.

Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti, in a post on X, said Tanveer was “driven to his death by cow vigilantes.” “As if the incident weren’t distressing enough, the culprits have yet to be booked, let alone arrested. The truth is, gau rakshaks enjoy institutional impunity from cold-blooded murder.”

Jammu: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), protests continued for the second consecutive day today in Ramban district against the killing of a Kashmiri youth, Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, by Hindu extremists.
