New Delhi: In a sharp political backlash, leaders of Left parties in India have warned that the proposed constitutional amendments linked to women\u2019s reservation and delimitation amount to a \u201cdeath warrant\u201d for the country\u2019s federal structure and democratic balance.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), John Brittas, termed the proposed legislation a dangerous move that could fundamentally alter the political landscape of India. He cautioned that the delimitation exercise, if based on the 2011 Census, would disproportionately increase representation of northern states while reducing or stagnating the share of southern states that have effectively implemented population control measures.<\/p>\n

He said the government has refused meaningful consultation with opposition parties, raising serious concerns about transparency and intent.<\/p>\n

Dipankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, meanwhile, pointed to provisions in the proposed legislation. “Three bills to be taken up in the forthcoming Special Session (16-18 April) of Parliament are now out in the public domain,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bhattacharya noted that, “The One Hundred and Thirty First Amendment Bill providing for one-third women’s reservation in Parliament and Assemblies has room for 815 members of parliament from various states of India and 35 from various union territories.”He pointed out that the current strength of Union Territories stands at 19 MPs.<\/p>\n

“The proposed new number of MPs from UTs is nearly double the current strength. Is this a loaded hint about new UTs to be created by dividing Bihar and West Bengal?” he questioned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
