Srinagar: Traffic movement and daily life were disrupted across Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir as transport operators staged a strike against the proposed expansion of Smart City bus services to district and rural routes in the territory.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the shutdown call was given by private transport associations, leading to buses and Sumos remaining off the roads. Sit-ins and demonstrations were also reported at multiple bus stands across the Kashmir Valley.<\/p>\n
Protesters said the move to extend BJP regime-run Smart City buses beyond Srinagar into district and rural areas could severely impact their livelihoods. They said that thousands of families dependent on private transport services may face economic hardship if the decision is implemented.<\/p>\n
A driver from Ganderbal, Tariq Shah, who has been operating a bus for the past decade, said the existing fleet of Smart City buses was already affecting earnings. He added that further expansion would reduce daily income, which currently ranges between Rs 300 and 400, making it difficult to sustain household expenses.<\/p>\n
Another transport operator stated that while Smart City buses in Srinagar and district headquarters may be acceptable, their operation in far-flung rural areas would create financial strain, especially for those repaying vehicle loans.<\/p>\n
