{"id":198807,"date":"2026-04-22T09:45:53","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/?p=198807"},"modified":"2026-04-22T09:46:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:46:44","slug":"students-risk-lives-crossing-river-on-logs-in-shopian-belying-development-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/2026\/04\/22\/students-risk-lives-crossing-river-on-logs-in-shopian-belying-development-claims.html","title":{"rendered":"Students risk lives crossing river on logs in Shopian, belying development claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/HGe9ZBMbgAEMELj?format=png&amp;name=360x360\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Srinagar : Exposing the hollowness of the Modi government\u2019s much-touted \u201cdevelopment and normalcy\u201d narrative in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, residents along the Rambiara river in south Kashmir\u2019s Shopian district say children are forced to risk their lives daily due to the absence of a bridge near Aliyalpora.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kashmir Media Service, dozens of schoolchildren from Devpora, Nagbal, and Digam villages cross the river on two narrow wooden logs to reach schools in Shopian town.<\/p>\n<p>Locals call the makeshift arrangement unsafe and unreliable, especially when the river swells suddenly during rain or snowmelt. \u201cA few days ago, our timely intervention saved two schoolchildren from drowning,\u201d said Mohammad Shafi, a resident, pointing to the turbulent waters. \u201cThere is always a risk of slipping and being swept away by the strong current,\u201d added Abdul Hamid, another local.<\/p>\n<p>Despite years of appeals, authorities have failed to build even a temporary footbridge, let alone a concrete one. \u201cWe want the authorities to at least construct a temporary diversion until a proper bridge is built,\u201d Hamid said.<\/p>\n<p>Residents say the demand has remained pending for years, isolating communities and endangering lives. The crisis is also hitting education.<\/p>\n<p>The situation belies New Delhi\u2019s repeated claims of \u201cunprecedented development\u201d in IIOJK post-August 2019.
