Islamabad: Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal has argued that Pakistan has \u201cregistered a significant geopolitical recovery in the last year or so\u201d while India misread the shift and remained comparatively passive.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sabharwal, writing in The Tribune, noted that \u201cPakistan is nowhere close to collapse,\u201d with civil-military discord receding and the \u201cspectre of a sovereign default\u201d easing after IMF accords. He said terrorism persists in some regions but is \u201cless menacing than\u2026 the first decade of this century,\u201d and stressed that \u201cPakistan is anything but isolated\u201d due to transactional collaboration with the US and ties with Iran, Saudi Arabia and China.<\/p>\n

The commentary highlighted that \u201cField Marshal Asim Munir has acquired a firm grip on the polity,\u201d aiding internal consolidation.<\/p>\n

Sabharwal wrote that India\u2019s strategic community reacted to Pakistan\u2019s gains \u201cwith\u2026 disbelief and a sense of insecurity,\u201d having long expected Pakistan\u2019s collapse. He conceded that \u201cour demands on cross-border terror do not register\u2026 as strongly as they did in the past\u201d and said \u201cIndia\u2019s room for manoeuvre was constrained by our tilt towards the US-Israel entente.\u201d<\/p>\n

India\u2019s \u201crelatively passive response to the conflict is a cause for introspection,\u201d he added, pointing to missed chances to lead in multilateral forums.
