Srinagar: The May 11 reminds the painful story of desecration of Kashmir\u2019s centuries-old shrine of famous religious scholar, Sheikh Noorud Din Wali (RA) by Indian troops at Charar-e-Sharief in Badgam, Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
A report released by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service, today, said that it was on the intervening night of May 10 and 11 in 1995 when Charar-i-Sharief went up in raging flames on the auspicious occasion of Eid day, to the chagrin and heartbreak of the Kashmiri people.<\/p>\n
The Charar-e-Sharief complex included a historic mosque and hundreds of residential houses that were also destroyed by the troops during a military siege that continued for 66 days. Over 1,000 houses and 200 shops in the mountainous town of Charar-e-Sharief were gutted.<\/p>\n
At least 1,500 households of Charar-i-Sharief in Budgam were left homeless. The 14th-century Sufi shrine and the grand mosque were reduced to a smouldering heap by Indian troops during a siege of the area.<\/p>\n
Anecdotes of the migrated citizens of Charar-e-Sharief who currently live 3 Kilometers away from the main shrine call it “cultural and historical genocide.”<\/p>\n
Journalists were reportedly prevented by Indian forces from entering the affected area. Around thirty people, mostly pro freedom activists, including a 65-year-old resident, were killed in the operation. Local Kashmiri residents and witnesses said that the scale of destruction and civilian displacement was the result of excessive force used by Indian forces. Many residents accused the Indian forces of showing little regard for civilian life and property during the operation. According to BBC News, the shrine was stormed by the Indian Army during the Operation, the report revealed.<\/p>\n
The report said the incident of burning of Charar-e-Sharif shrine by Indian troops is still fresh in the memory of Kashmiris even after the passage of thirty one years. It said Indian troops have destroyed and desecrated hundreds of Muslim holy places including Dargah Hazratbal in the last 37 years in the occupied territory.<\/p>\n
The report said the burning of Charar-e-Sharif shrine by Indian troops is one of the most tragic incidents in Kashmir\u2019s history. It pointed out BJP and RSS are openly hurting religious sentiments of the Muslims across IIOJK. It said targeting of faith and cultural identity of the Kashmiri people by India is a clear violation of basic human norms and fundamental precepts of international law.<\/p>\n
The report said India is applying every brutal method to suppress the Kashmiris\u2019 freedom sentiment but will never succeed in its nefarious designs. It added that the international human rights bodies must come forward to save the Kashmiri Muslims from Hindutva fascism.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference in a statement has said that desecration and damage caused to the mosque and shrine during the military siege in Charar-e-Sharief and repeated incidence of extra-judicial killings in various places in IIOJK are manifestations of the unabated Indian state terrorism to which Kashmiris are subjected in the occupied territory.
