Its location near Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and close to China’s Chumbi Valley makes it one of the most militarily significant regions in South Asia. For New Delhi, control over this corridor is a matter of national security. For critics, however, the latest developments raise a deeper question: is security being used as a cover for political centralisation?

According to NDTV, the new West Bengal government has cleared long-pending border land proposals, including approval for around 120 acres near the Siliguri Corridor and more than **600 acres for border fencing** along the India-Bangladesh frontier. The move comes soon after the BJP’s major victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where the party won **207 seats**, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule in the state.

The BJP government has presented the land transfer as a necessary step to strengthen border infrastructure, improve logistics and protect India’s northeastern connection. But opposition voices say the timing is politically explosive. They argue that the Centre is moving quickly to bring Bengal’s strategic geography under tighter federal influence, especially after dislodging a powerful regional government.

For Mamata Banerjee’s supporters, this is not just a routine administrative decision. They see it as part of a wider BJP pattern: first capture a state electorally, then reshape its institutions, land priorities and security architecture in line with the Centre’s agenda. Banerjee herself has continued to challenge the legitimacy and political consequences of the transition, while the Calcutta High Court recently directed the new BJP government to strictly maintain law and order after concerns were raised over post-poll violence.

The strategic nature of the decision has further intensified the debate. Reports say the state has also approved the transfer of important highway stretches to central agencies such as NHAI and NHIDCL, including routes connected to North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Supporters call it infrastructure development; critics call it the slow conversion of Bengal into a forward security platform.

Political observers believe the BJP is using the China threat narrative to justify a more aggressive security footprint in eastern India. They argue that roads, land, border fencing and administrative control are now being folded into a larger national-security framework, reducing the space for state-level autonomy.

The concern is not only about land. It is about power. In a federal democracy, who controls strategic territory: the elected state government, or the Centre in the name of security? In West Bengal, that question has become urgent.

For the BJP, the Chicken Neck push is a security necessity. For its opponents, it is a warning sign: Bengal’s political defeat may now be followed by strategic absorption.

The battle for West Bengal, it seems, did not end with the election result. It has only shifted from the ballot box to the borderland.

Kolkata/New Delhi: West Bengal has entered a politically charged new phase after the BJP’s rise to power in the state and its swift move to clear strategic land proposals near the Siliguri Corridor, one of India’s most sensitive security zones.
