Jammu : In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have intensified demolition drives against tribal and nomadic families, with at least 20 residential structures belonging to Gujjar and Bakerwal families razed in the Sidhra area of Jammu under the guise of an anti-encroachment campaign.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the demolished structures included Gujjar Kothas and temporary hutments inhabited by nomadic tribal families who have lived and grazed their cattle in the area for decades.<\/p>\n
Local residents said the drive has created fear and insecurity among already marginalized tribal communities dependent on seasonal migration and cattle rearing for survival.<\/p>\n
The action by the forest department triggered strong political and public reactions, with leaders terming the move selective, unjustified and inhumane.<\/p>\n
Senior National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmed strongly condemned the demolition drive, calling it \u201ctargeted and unacceptable.\u201d He said the tribal community in Jammu and Kashmir was already living under fear due to repeated eviction and demolition incidents, and the latest action had sent shockwaves across the nomadic population.<\/p>\n
Mian Altaf said the affected families had been residing in the area for generations and relied entirely on grazing lands for their livelihood. He criticized the administration and forest department for acting without properly verifying the historical presence and rights of the tribal population. He urged the authorities to immediately halt such operations, probe the incident and ensure rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected families.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, CPI-M leader and MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami also slammed the demolition campaign, describing it as insensitive and unjustified. He said Gujjar and Bakerwal families were already living in difficult conditions and such actions only added to their suffering and insecurity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe affected families have been staying in these areas for years. Any move that leaves poor people without shelter must be viewed seriously and handled with humanity,\u201d Tarigami said.
