Srinagar: Three Indian army officers, including a Major General, were injured after an Indian Army helicopter crashed in Leh district of Ladakh in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Cheetah helicopter crashed in the Tangtse area in Leh during a routine sortie in the high-altitude region. The injured officers were immediately evacuated for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
A Lieutenant Colonel and a Major were piloting the single-engine helicopter, while the passenger onboard was Major General Sachin Mehta, General Officer Commanding of the 3 Infantry Division. A formal inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the crash.<\/p>\n
The incident has once again raised concerns over the continued use of ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters by the Indian armed forces, especially in high-altitude regions such as Ladakh and the Siachen glacier, despite repeated crashes and longstanding calls for their replacement over the last decade.<\/p>\n
Originally inducted in the 1960s, these vintage helicopters continue to operate in some of the world\u2019s most challenging terrains, while soldiers and officers continue paying the price with their lives. Since 2017, nearly 20 helicopter crashes involving Indian armed forces have claimed the lives of around 40 officers and soldiers, intensifying criticism over delays in fleet modernization and concerns regarding flight safety. For the Indian establishment, in a country overflowing with population, replacing a dead soldier is considered far cheaper than replacing an ageing vintage helicopter.<\/p>\n
