Guwahati: The BJP government in the Indian state of Assam has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state assembly amid strong opposition from various political parties.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Bill seeks to create a common legal framework governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships in the state.<\/p>\n
The legislation was passed by voice vote despite protests from opposition MLAs, who demanded that the Bill be sent to a Select Committee for wider discussion and public consultation.<\/p>\n
With this move, Assam has become the third Indian state after the BJP-ruled Uttarakhand and Gujarat to adopt a UCC-related law.<\/p>\n
Opposition parties, including the Congress, Raijor Dal, and Trinamool Congress, strongly opposed the Bill, arguing that existing laws already address many of the issues cited by the government.<\/p>\n
Congress MLA Zakir Hussain termed the Bill unnecessary, saying legal provisions already deal with matters such as polygamy and child marriage. He added that the legislation has been presented merely as part of a political agenda.<\/p>\n
Another Congress MLA Zubair objected to the Bill, saying it gives excessive powers to authorities and raises concerns over privacy violations.<\/p>\n
Congress MLA, Tanzil Hussain said his party would continue to strongly oppose the legislation and stage a forceful protest during the assembly proceedings.<\/p>\n
Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi also criticized the Bill, calling it an invasion of privacy. \u201cThis is complete interference in private liberty.
