Mumbai: Police in BJP-ruled Maharashtra imposed restrictions on animal sacrifice in several housing societies in Kalyan city during Eid ul-Adha, citing concerns over communal tensions following objections from some Hindu residents. The move drew criticism from Muslim residents, who said the ritual had been performed at the same locations for years without any dispute.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, Indian police personnel were deployed at the entrances of several residential complexes, including areas in Patripool, Kalyan in Thane district, and access was restricted to residents during Eid.<\/p>\n
Muslim residents said they returned from Eid prayers to find barricades and a heavy police presence, arguing that the restrictions interfered with a religious practice that must be completed within a specified period.<\/p>\n
They further said that the restrictions were imposed without prior notice. One resident said, \u201cWe came back from the mosque and suddenly saw barricades. No one had been informed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several residents said the authorities are criminalising a long-standing religious practice. \u201cSacrificing animals has been turned into a crime,\u201d one resident said.
\nThey added that the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and local police had issued a notice only a day before Eid. \u201cThere was no clear date mentioned on it. It only stated that this is against the law,\u201d another resident said. Expressing frustration, he added, \u201cOur sacrifice has been stopped. We are being suppressed. In India, Muslims have to face torture. It\u2019s injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Questioning the restrictions, a resident from a Muslim-majority locality said that despite the entire area being predominantly Muslim, restrictions had still been imposed on the ritual of animal sacrifice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
