It was a brutal, evidence-packed indictment of Narendra Modi’s Hindutva regime, laying bare its systematic persecution of minorities, its fascist toolkit of laws and violence, and its desperate attempts to silence critics even beyond India’s borders.

Experts and advocates detailed how Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enabled majoritarian rule, resulting in the systemic persecution of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and Dalits.

Chair Vicky Hartzler didn’t mince words: anti-conversion laws now choke 13 states, vigilante thugs hunt Christians with impunity, “reconversions” are forced at gunpoint or mob fury, and the FCRA weapon is strangling faith-based NGOs and churches. India’s religious freedom is in freefall and USCIRF, for the seventh straight year, demands India be designated a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). Enough with the excuses. Modi’s India has earned pariah status.

Vice Chair Asif Mahmood tore into the deportation machines, arbitrary detentions, and abuse of CAA/NRC in Assam that target Muslims and Rohingya. Activists rot in jail. The diaspora faces surveillance, OCI card revocations, and transnational repression straight from New Delhi’s playbook. This isn’t governance, it’s a paranoid police state exporting its bigotry.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) highlighted the democratic backsliding and the looming threat of property seizures against Christian institutions. Accountability? Zero. Impunity reigns.

Stephen Rapp, former US Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice, framed it perfectly through an atrocity-prevention lens: hateful venom spewed by RSS-linked extremists, fake “encounter killings” by police, and total impunity for slaughter. The Independent Panel of Experts’ findings on Assam and Uttar Pradesh against Muslims are damning. This is state-tolerated—if not state-orchestrated—persecution.

Angana P. Chatterji exposed the Hindu nationalist machinery grinding minorities into dust via anti-conversion laws and CAA enforcement.

Raqib Hameed Naik of India Hate Lab called out state-led violence, demanded targeted sanctions on complicit officials, and rightly flagged social media giants and companies enabling the hate ecosystem and disinformation machine.

Arjun Singh Sethi laid bare the assassinations and plots abroad Nijjar in Canada, Pannun in the US part of Modi’s global hit list against Sikhs and other dissenters.

David Curry detailed the war on Christians: FCRA choking churches and schools, anti-conversion witch hunts, and the resulting mob terror.

This hearing wasn’t outlier testimony. It was a chorus of experts, survivors, and officials confirming what the world already knows: Under Modi and the BJP-RSS axis, India has become a majoritarian nightmare.

Minorities Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits are second-class at best, targets at worst. Hateful rhetoric flows from Chief Ministers. Police act as enforcers. Laws are twisted into weapons. And when caught, the regime cries “Western interference” or “Hinduphobia” while doubling down.

India’s so-called “world’s largest democracy” is rotting from within. Its government sponsors or tolerates severe, ongoing violations. It harasses its own people and hunts critics overseas. The evidence is overwhelming. The trajectory is clear: downward, violent, and unrepentant.

The US and civilized nations must act. Designate India as a CPC. Impose targeted sanctions on the perpetrators. Restrict arms flows. Hold social media enablers accountable. Stop pretending Modi’s India is a reliable partner while it crushes its own diversity and exports repression.

The hearing on May 7, 2026, wasn’t just another event. It was an international alarm bell. India under Modi stands exposed not as a rising power, but as a declining tyranny masquerading as democracy. The world is watching. The question is whether it will finally have the courage to confront this ugly reality.

Washington: held a damning hearing titled “Deteriorating Religious Freedom Conditions in India” on May 7, 2026, at the Dirksen Senate office building in Washington, DC.
