Prior to the complete closure, runway operations will remain unavailable every Monday and Tuesday from July 1 to September 30 under a “phased maintenance” programme reportedly planned by the Indian Air Force.

Officials have maintained that the measures are necessary to ensure aviation safety and improve the long-term operational efficiency of the airport. However, the unusually lengthy restrictions have raised eyebrows among political and strategic observers, particularly as flight operations at the airport have already been subject to limitations since April following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Indian Air Force.

Analysts say the scale and duration of the runway closure are unusual for a civilian airport that serves as the Valley’s primary air link. They argue that the development has fueled questions about whether the work is solely related to routine maintenance or whether it is linked to broader military requirements in the region.

The announcement has also sparked concern among tourism and business stakeholders, as the complete shutdown coincides with the peak Durga Puja travel season, when thousands of tourists traditionally visit the Kashmir Valley. Travel operators have warned of cancellations, economic losses and disruptions to connectivity.

Observers note that the airport’s dual civilian-military character has further intensified public interest in the reasons behind the extensive maintenance schedule. They say greater transparency regarding the nature and scope of the work would help address concerns and dispel speculation surrounding the closure.

Srinagar: The announcement of a 16-day complete shutdown of Srinagar International Airport has triggered concern and speculation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, with observers questioning the timing and scale of the exercise amid continuing regional tensions.
