Srinagar: Chief Minister of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Omar Abdullah, has said that Article 370 was never an obstacle to the development of the territory and that its abrogation has failed to bring about the economic transformation promised by the BJP-led Indian government.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a function in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah said that Article 370 had long been portrayed as the primary cause of IIOJK\u2019s underdevelopment, whereas the facts tell a different story. He maintained that the constitutional provision neither hindered progress nor did its revocation lead to any remarkable developmental gains in the territory. He stressed that sustainable development is only possible in an environment of peace and stability.<\/p>\n
Criticizing the BJP government, Omar Abdullah said Article 370 was used by the saffron party merely as a political tool to advance a particular narrative. He pointed out that several Indian states continue to enjoy special constitutional safeguards and restrictions related to land ownership, yet they have never been subjected to the same level of criticism directed at occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
On the issue of statehood, Omar Abdullah said that the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s statehood remains his government\u2019s top priority. He said that statehood is essential for ensuring effective, responsive and accountable governance.
