They noted that Sikh communities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia emerged as influential voices on issues relating to Punjab, human rights and Sikh political aspirations.

The analysts said that cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, London and Sydney witnessed growing political activism among Sikhs, who organized protests, awareness campaigns and advocacy initiatives to draw international attention to their concerns. They maintained that actions aimed at suppressing dissent in Punjab ultimately strengthened support for the Khalistan movement among sections of the Sikh diaspora.

They said India’s strategy backfired by turning a local conflict into a worldwide issue, as Sikh organizations and community groups increasingly raised their concerns in international forums and before governments and human rights bodies. The resulting activism, they added, increased diplomatic and political pressure on India and kept the Punjab issue alive on the global stage.

The observers further noted that Sikh identity and political awareness have grown stronger across the globe over the decades, with diaspora communities playing a central role in preserving historical memory and highlighting what they describe as India’s failure to address minority grievances through dialogue and democratic means. They emphasized that the developments demonstrated how internal unrest in Punjab evolved into a matter of international concern, creating long-term tensions that continue to resonate beyond India’s borders. They added that attempts to control dissent through force often produce unintended consequences, fueling resistance and expanding support networks far beyond the affected region.

The analysts concluded that the global spread of Sikh activism serves as a reminder that unresolved political grievances can transcend national boundaries and become enduring international issues.

It is worth mentioning here that Operation Blue Star, launched in June 1984 to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and armed militants from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, marked a turning point in Punjab’s political landscape. The military action, which caused extensive damage to the Akal Takht and significant loss of life, deeply impacted Sikh sentiment in India and abroad. For many, the assault on one of Sikhism’s holiest sites was perceived as an attack on the community’s religious and political identity. In the aftermath, the operation acted as a catalyst for the Khalistan movement, galvanizing support among sections of the Sikh diaspora and within Punjab. It intensified calls for a separate Sikh state and contributed to a decade of militancy and unrest in the region, shaping Punjab’s politics and Sikh community relations with the Indian state for years to come.

Amritsar: Sikh leaders, activists and political analysts have said that India’s handling of the Punjab crisis transformed what was initially a domestic issue into a global political challenge, with Sikh diaspora communities becoming increasingly active in advocating for their rights and identity across the world.
