\"\"Jaipur: In the Indian state of Rajasthan, a legislator of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought the renaming of Islampur village in Jhunjhunu district to Shri Rampur, a move that has been strongly opposed by local residents.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, residents of Islampur staged a protest against the proposed name change and submitted a memorandum to the Jhunjhunu District Collector. The move follows a letter sent by the Rajasthan Chief Minister on May 29, seeking the Collector’s opinion on a proposal submitted by BJP legislator Rajendra Bhamboo on February 17 recommending that the village’s name be changed from Islampur to Shri Rampur.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media, Rajendra Bhamboo claimed that both BJP representatives and a section of the public favored the renaming of the village, which prompted him to make the recommendation.<\/p>\n

The proposal, however, has met with strong resistance from local residents, who gathered outside the Jhunjhunu District Collectorate and raised slogans against the BJP legislator.<\/p>\n

Former village head (Sarpanch) Amin Minyar said the village was founded in 1451 by Nawab Islam Khan and that its name had never been a matter of dispute among residents. He urged the government not to alter the village’s historical identity and warned against turning the issue into a communal matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of the village have lived peacefully with this name for centuries. We will not allow this issue to be communalized and appeal to the government not to change the village’s name,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Amin Minyar further maintained that changing the village’s name without the consent of its residents and the Gram Panchayat would be unconstitutional. He warned that if the authorities proceeded with the proposal despite public opposition, the villagers would launch a protest movement against the decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
