The British advice said force should be used only as a last option, yet India opted for it.

Moderate Sikh leader Harchand Singh Longowal’s negotiation efforts failed, leaving space for armed confrontation. Former Army Major General Shabeg Singh, who had served in the Indian military, organized defenses inside the complex, making the assault more deadly.

The death toll remains deeply disputed. Official figures cite 575 killed, while other reports give much higher numbers. The Akal Takht was badly damaged, turning the operation into a lasting symbol of religious pain and state force. Media curbs and information control eroded public trust, with Lt Gen K S Brar, a Sikh officer who led the assault, later admitting that shutting out the media was wrong.

The attack fractured the Indian Army itself. By pitting Sikh soldiers against Sikhs, New Delhi’s divide-and-rule tactic triggered desertions and mutiny. Academic accounts report over 2,000 Sikh army personnel deserted or mutinied after Blue Star, with unrest spreading across cantonments.

The army won inside the temple but lost trust among Sikh soldiers and the wider community. Instead of ending the Khalistan movement, Blue Star internationalized it.

Sikh diaspora activity, limited before the 1980s, surged after 1984. Gurdwaras in the UK, Canada, the USA and Australia became centers of protest, fundraising and political organization.

Many Sikhs abroad saw it not as a security action but as an attack on the community itself. The long shadow of 1984 still shapes diaspora politics and public pressure on India today. India used force to close one crisis, but created a bigger wound that became political, religious, emotional and international.

Amritsar : Operation Blue Star in June 1984, when Indian forces stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers, exposed how New Delhi turned a political crisis into a military attack on the holiest Sikh shrine, with lasting political, religious and international fallout.
