His death at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail comes just weeks before the trial court was expected to deliver its verdict in the long-pending case.

Qadir’s counsel, Advocate Rahman Irikkur, said the Indian Supreme Court had directed the trial court to pronounce its judgment within four months, with the deadline reportedly set for July 16. He said Qadir had been hoping to receive justice after spending nearly two decades in prison as an undertrial.

The lawyer said that Qadir had been suffering from severe diabetes and multiple health complications for several years and that repeated requests for medical bail and adequate treatment were ignored despite his deteriorating condition.

He further said that a prison doctor had issued a written warning a day before Qadir’s death, stating that the inmate was in critical condition and required urgent specialized medical care. However, he was not shifted to a properly equipped hospital in time. Qadir had become wheelchair-bound in recent months due to worsening health problems.

The incident has renewed concerns among rights activists over prolonged detention of undertrials, delays in judicial proceedings, and inadequate healthcare facilities in Indian prisons. Observers say the death of Abdul Qadir before the conclusion of his trial raises serious questions about access to justice and the treatment of prisoners suffering from critical illnesses.

The 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts case has remained pending for nearly 17 years, with several accused spending lengthy periods in custody awaiting a final verdict.

Bengaluru : A 62-year-old Muslim undertrial prisoner, Abdul Qadir, who had spent nearly 17 years in jail in connection with a case, died at a jail in Bengaluru in Karnataka state, raising fresh concerns over prolonged incarceration, delayed justice and medical negligence in Indian prisons.
