Srinagar : On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, civil society activists have said that India continues to use torture as a systematic tool of repression in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, urging the international community to hold New Delhi accountable for alleged human rights violations.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the activists said thousands of Kashmiris have been subjected to physical, mental and psychological torture during decades of Indian rule in the territory.<\/p>\n
They maintained that torture has become an instrument of fear and intimidation aimed at suppressing dissent and silencing the Kashmiri people’s demand for their UN-recognized right to self-determination.<\/p>\n
They said numerous interrogation and detention centres operated by Indian forces have become symbols of repression, where many Kashmiris have allegedly suffered death, permanent disability and lifelong trauma.<\/p>\n
The activists called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to take urgent notice of the widespread use of torture in IIOJK and ensure accountability for those responsible for what they described as grave human rights abuses.<\/p>\n
