New Delhi : A bipartisan group of US Senators has introduced legislation proposing tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from India and four other countries over their continued purchase of Russian oil.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Bill targets the five largest buyers of Russian oil \u2014 India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan. It authorises US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs ranging from zero to 100 per cent, depending on circumstances.<\/p>\n

The measure was introduced by late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal said the Bill will also impose \u201cfull blocking sanctions\u201d on key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, financial and defence industries.<\/p>\n

India had sharply increased imports of discounted Russian crude after 2022, maintaining that its energy purchases were driven by national interest and the need to ensure affordable supplies.<\/p>\n

New Delhi has said it does not recognise unilateral sanctions not mandated by the United Nations.The legislation must clear both chambers of the US Congress before it can become law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
