Lucknow : Authorities in the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh state have ordered the demolition of most buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, an institution founded by jailed Muslim opposition leader Azam Khan, in the latest action widely viewed as part of a sustained campaign of political and religious persecution under the state\u2019s Hindutva regime.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Rampur Development Authority has ordered the demolition of 38 of the university\u2019s 40 buildings, alleging they were constructed without the required planning approvals, Indian news portal The Wire reported. The university has been given 15 days to remove the structures, failing which the authorities will carry out the demolition.<\/p>\n
The move is the latest in a series of actions targeting Azam Khan, a senior leader of the opposition Samajwadi Party and former Uttar Pradesh minister. Since the BJP came to power in the state in 2017, Khan, his wife and son have been booked in dozens of politically motivated and fabricated cases, while properties linked to the family have been demolished, seized or subjected to repeated investigations.<\/p>\n
Officials claimed that only the university\u2019s medical college and one academic building had obtained the necessary approvals, while the remaining structures, spread over 82,000 square meters, were allegedly built without authorization.<\/p>\n
The university administration, however, rejected the allegations, maintaining that many of the buildings were constructed before the area came under the jurisdiction of the Rampur Development Authority and therefore did not require its approval.<\/p>\n
Founded in 2006, Mohammad Ali Jauhar University was established to provide affordable higher education to students particularly from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in the region where educational opportunities remain limited. The university offers programmes in law, medicine, engineering, humanities and other disciplines and serves thousands of students.<\/p>\n
Students expressed deep concern over the demolition order, warning that razing most of the campus would severely disrupt their education and jeopardize their academic future.<\/p>\n
Opposition parties condemned the move, stating that the BJP government was selectively targeting the university because of its association with Azam Khan. They questioned why similar action had not been taken against other educational institutions lacking planning approvals and said the demolition would punish thousands of students rather than address any regulatory violations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
