New Delhi: Dozens of protesters were injured, several of them seriously, after Indian forces used tear gas shells and baton charges to disperse thousands of youths, students and supporters participating in the ‘Parliament March’ (Chalo Sansad) called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters were prevented from reaching Parliament House on the opening day of the Monsoon Session as Delhi Police, backed by paramilitary personnel, launched a crackdown on the demonstrators.<\/p>\n
The protesters had gathered at Jantar Mantar before marching towards Parliament to demand accountability over the NEET paper leak, reforms in India’s examination system and the resignation of Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.<\/p>\n
The Delhi administration enforced a multi-layered security plan to block the march. Metro stations around Jantar Mantar were closed, roads were barricaded and heavy contingents of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces were deployed across the area. Protesters also alleged that mobile internet services around Jantar Mantar were disrupted using signal jammers to restrict communication.<\/p>\n
Despite the restrictions, thousands of youths from Delhi and neighboring states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, reached the protest venue. As demonstrators attempted to march towards Parliament, police resorted to repeated baton charges, detained several student leaders and activists, and announced over loudspeakers that prohibitory orders under Section 144 were in force and that no permission had been granted for the march.<\/p>\n
The confrontation intensified after protesters crossed initial barricades and advanced towards Patel Chowk. Police fired tear gas shells and pushed the crowd back.<\/p>\n
Protesters raised slogans demanding permission to continue the march, while some responded by throwing shoes, water bottles and other objects after the tear gas shelling.<\/p>\n
After several hours of clashes, police succeeded in dispersing the protesters, preventing the Parliament March from reaching Parliament House.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, prominent environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who remains admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after being forcibly shifted there by Delhi Police on July 18 following a 21-day hunger strike, said he would continue his fast until student representatives were allowed to meet members of Parliament.<\/p>\n
The CJP has been staging a protest at Jantar Mantar for nearly a month against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, particularly the NEET paper leak, demanding accountability, educational reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.<\/p>\n
