Srinagar: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra has termed the continued denial of full statehood to Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir the \u201cbiggest betrayal\u201d by the BJP.<\/p>\n

According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a public meeting in Jammu North, Sadhotra said the prolonged Union Territory status had undermined the democratic aspirations and dignity of the Kashmiri people. He said assurances to restore statehood given in Indian Parliament and before the Supreme Court remained unfulfilled despite elections and delimitation already being completed.<\/p>\n

Sadhotra said the elected government\u2019s mandate must be respected and alleged that the BJP\u2019s \u201cauthoritarian attitude\u201d was creating hurdles in governance through dual control and uncertainty over division of powers.<\/p>\n

\u201cStatehood is about the rights, dignity and democratic voice of the people. It cannot be reduced to a political slogan,\u201d he said, adding that clear institutional authority was needed for development in tourism, agriculture, horticulture, industry and employment.<\/p>\n
