Srinagar : While India celebrates its Independence Day, Kashmiris in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) continue to face killings, arrests, restrictions and denial of their fundamental rights, exposing a stark contradiction between New Delhi\u2019s claims of democracy and the realities on the ground.<\/p>\n
A report compiled by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service said that since August 5, 2019, 1,069 Kashmiris have been killed, 2,708 injured and 37,736 arrested in IIOJK, while Indian troops and agencies continue to conduct cordon and search operations, house raids and other coercive measures on a daily basis to create a sense of fear among the Kashmiri population.<\/p>\n
It said Kashmiris observed India\u2019s Independence Day as a Black Day today to protest New Delhi\u2019s continued occupation of their homeland and draw international attention to the denial of their right to self-determination.<\/p>\n
The report noted that while India celebrates its freedom from British rule, Kashmiris in IIOJK continue to live under extensive military and other restrictions. The Indian military and police establishment has converted the entire occupied territory into a military garrison, with checkpoints and barricades erected at all main points and squares. Indian troops, paramilitary and police personnel have been deployed in large numbers in every nook and corner of the territory, subjecting the people to immense discomfort.<\/p>\n
It said the restrictions imposed on Kashmiris during India\u2019s Independence Day celebrations further exposed the contradiction between New Delhi\u2019s projection of itself as a democratic and rights-respecting state and the situation prevailing in IIOJK.<\/p>\n

The report recalled that Kashmiris have faced political repression and human rights violations since 1947 for demanding their inalienable right to self-determination. It also documented the mass killing of Muslims in Jammu and surrounding areas during 1947-48, along with the looting and burning of homes and abduction of women. It said that 450,000 Muslims, including women and children, have been killed by Indian forces along with Hindutva communal forces since 1947, including over 350, 000 Muslims inhumanly and brutally killed in Rajouri, Poonch and Jammu areas between August 1947 to 1948.<\/p>\n
The report said the situation further deteriorated following the BJP-led Indian government\u2019s August 5, 2019, unilateral and unconstitutional measures, which stripped IIOJK of its special constitutional status and introduced sweeping political and administrative changes.<\/p>\n
It emphasized that Kashmiris were being punished for demanding a right recognized under international law, while the use of force, arrests and restrictions continued to suppress political dissent and freedom of expression.<\/p>\n
The report said human rights violations in IIOJK had been extensively documented by United Nations bodies and international rights organizations, which had repeatedly raised alarm over arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force, restrictions on fundamental freedoms and other abuses in the occupied territory.<\/p>\n
It concluded that the human rights crisis in IIOJK is directly connected to the decades-old unresolved Kashmir dispute, stressing that lasting peace in South Asia would remain elusive unless the aspirations of the Kashmiri people were addressed.<\/p>\n
The report called for immediate international intervention to end human rights violations, release political prisoners, uphold fundamental freedoms, respect the Kashmiri people\u2019s right to self-determination and facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
