{"id":208020,"date":"2026-08-15T22:53:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T17:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/?p=208020"},"modified":"2026-08-15T23:00:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T18:00:28","slug":"current-unsc-structure-no-longer-reflects-geopolitical-realities-of-2026-aizaz-chaudhry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/2026\/08\/15\/current-unsc-structure-no-longer-reflects-geopolitical-realities-of-2026-aizaz-chaudhry.html","title":{"rendered":"Current UNSC structure no longer reflects geopolitical realities of 2026: Aizaz Chaudhry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-208021\" src=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/8-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/8-1.png 480w, https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/8-1-277x220.png 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Islamabad: Former Pakistani diplomat Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry has said the current structure of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) no longer reflects the geopolitical realities of 2026, making comprehensive reform essential.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking in a media interview on UNSC reform and Pakistan\u2019s position, Chaudhry said the Council\u2019s composition had remained largely unchanged since 1965, despite the UN\u2019s membership expanding to 193 countries.<\/p>\n<p>He said the central disagreement over reform was between countries seeking an increase in elected, non-permanent seats and those advocating the addition of new permanent members.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhry said Pakistan supported the Uniting for Consensus model, which favours expanding rotating, elected non-permanent seats rather than creating additional permanent memberships.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-208020-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/WhatsApp-Video-2026-08-15-at-10.30.48-AM.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/WhatsApp-Video-2026-08-15-at-10.30.48-AM.mp4\">https:\/\/kmsnews.org\/kms\/assests\/2026\/08\/WhatsApp-Video-2026-08-15-at-10.30.48-AM.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>He described permanent membership as undemocratic and argued that increasing elected seats would provide more equitable representation to regions that remain underrepresented, particularly Africa and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhry said Pakistan opposed permanent seats for India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, arguing that adding more permanent members would further privilege powerful countries within the international system.<\/p>\n<p>He said India\u2019s alleged non-compliance with UN Security Council resolutions, particularly those concerning the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, was another reason Pakistan could not accept New Delhi\u2019s bid for permanent membership.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhry also warned that expanding the permanent membership and veto system could further paralyse the UN Security Council.
