New Delhi: Cases of large-scale financial fraud and corruption involving senior Indian military officers have exposed serious weaknesses in the accountability and procurement systems of the Indian armed forces.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a major case linked to the 166 Military Hospital in Jammu, an Army Medical Corps Lieutenant Colonel was cashiered and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for fraudulent medical purchases worth around Rs3 crore. A retired Major General who had commanded the facility was also convicted on 16 charges involving alleged financial irregularities amounting to Rs11 crore.<\/p>\n
The cases involved allegations of fabricated emergency demands for medicines and equipment, bypassing of competitive bidding procedures and manipulation of procurement processes to benefit private vendors.<\/p>\n
The officers were accused of ignoring or relying on forged technical approval documents in the procurement process.
\nOfficial records reportedly show more than 1,800 corruption cases registered across the Indian armed forces between 2000 and 2023, with the Indian Army accounting for over 97 percent of the recorded cases of financial fraud and administrative misconduct.<\/p>\n
The record of irregularities also includes major land scandals, including the Sukhna and Adarsh Housing cases, as well as cases involving bribery in military recruitment.<\/p>\n
The recurring scandals raise serious questions about transparency, financial oversight and accountability within the Indian military establishment, where senior officers have repeatedly faced allegations of abusing their authority and public resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
