His prolonged confinement demonstrated the limits of treating political dissent solely as a security problem. Suppressing a voice may restrict its public reach for a time, but it does not necessarily eliminate the political grievances that gave rise to that voice.<\/p>\n The most important question on his death anniversary, therefore, is not simply how Geelani should be remembered. It is what his life tells us about the unresolved Kashmir question. His death did not remove the political aspirations he represented. Nor can the passage of time alone resolve a dispute that remains deeply rooted in questions of identity, representation and self-determination.<\/p>\n Geelani’s legacy should also be approached critically and historically. Remembering a political leader does not require ignoring disagreements surrounding his politics. It requires understanding the circumstances that shaped his choices, the principles he defended and the costs he was prepared to bear for them.<\/p>\n Four years after his death, the enduring lesson of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s life is therefore one of political conviction. He demonstrated that leadership, in his understanding, meant remaining committed to a cause even when the personal consequences were severe. Whether one agreed with his politics or not, his determination made him one of the defining figures of modern Kashmiri politics.<\/p>\n On his death anniversary, his legacy should not be reduced to a slogan or a photograph. It should be examined through the larger question that defined his life: can lasting peace be built without addressing the aspirations and rights of the people at the centre of a conflict? For Geelani, the answer was clear. His life was devoted to making that answer impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n
