In the troubled history of nineteenth-century Kashmir, few figures stand out with the moral courage and compassion of Lieut Robert Thorpe\u2014a British traveler and writer who visited the Valley in the 1860s. It was an era in which the Kashmiri Muslims were reeling under the despotic rule of Maharaja Ranbir Singh (1857\u20131885), who assumed the throne after Maharaja Gulab Singh.<\/p>\n
Gulab Singh had acquired Kashmir from the British under the notorious Treaty of Amritsar of 1846, for the princely sum of 75 lakh Nanakshahi rupees\u2014a transaction remembered as the sale of a land and its people. The sale-deed virtually reduced Kashmir and its inhabitants to little more than a commodity, to be bartered away in a bargain struck between rulers.<\/p>\n
At a time when the oppressed and impoverished people of the Valley had no right or power to protest to make their suffering heard, Thorpe chose an inconvenient path and decided to become a voice for the voiceless Kashmiris, who were being treated like animals in their own homeland, marginalized and deprived of their right to live a dignified life.<\/p>\n
Shaken by the mistreatment of the ordinary Kashmiris, and the oppressive conditions faced by the Kashmiri Muslim peasantry under Dogra rule, Thrope, despite being a member of the wider colonial community, sought to expose injustice and give voice to a people whose grievances had long remained unheard.<\/p>\n
Thorpe, in particular, documented heavy taxation, forced labour (begar), poverty, and administrative oppression of the Dogra Maharajas. He communicated his observations to British authorities back in Calcutta and Lahore and strongly criticized the Dogra administration. His writings later contributed to greater awareness of the suffering of Kashmiris under Maharaja Ranbir Singh.<\/p>\n
His criticism of the Dogra administration made him an important early European witness to the pathetic social and political conditions of Kashmiris in nineteenth-century. His outspoken criticism of maladministration and the oppressive conditions experienced by large sections of the Kashmiri population brought him into direct conflict with the political establishment of the Dogra state.<\/p>\n
As a result, Thrope was ordered to quit Kashmir by the angered Maharaja; when he refused to leave, he was reportedly tied to his bed and carried towards the pass. He somehow escaped, returned back to Srinagar, but died the following day (22 November 1868) under mysterious circumstances.<\/p>\n
His death has acquired considerable symbolic significance in the historiography of nineteenth-century Kashmir. His subsequent demise under disputed and uncertain circumstances has raised important questions concerning the state’s treatment of political criticism and those who sought to expose administrative abuses. In this sense, Thorpe’s fate may be understood within the broader historical phenomenon of the suppression or marginalization of inconvenient critics whose testimony threatened to challenge the legitimacy of those in power.<\/p>\n
Thorpe’s legacy therefore extends beyond the unresolved question of the precise cause of his death. His life and writings represent an early attempt to document and communicate the suffering, exploitation, and administrative injustices experienced by Kashmiris under Dogra rule. His story remains historically significant as a case study in the relationship between political authority, dissent, and the struggle to make the grievances of marginalized populations visible to a wider audience.<\/p>\n
More importantly, his legacy therefore rests on his willingness to identify with the suffering of Kashmir’s marginalized population and to challenge a system that treated ordinary people with profound cruelty and denied them dignity and justice.<\/p>\n
Robert Thorpe\u2019s remarkable contribution to humanity, particularly his courageous efforts to awaken the conscience of the world to the injustices inflicted upon the people of Kashmir, has been widely acknowledged and appreciated by contemporary historians. Lying buried in the Christian Cemetery at Shaikh Bagh, Srinagar, the epitaph on his grave carries the poignant inscription: \u201cHe gave his life for Kashmir.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his book \u201cKashmir in Sunlight and Shade\u201d C. E. Tyndale-Biscoe\u2014a Christian missionary and educationalist who served as the principal of the Church Mission Society (CMS) School in Srinagar, later known as Tyndale Biscoe School wrote about Thrope and his grave: \u201cIn the European cemetery at the Sheikh Bagh \u2026 is a grave which I never pass without taking my hat off, for in it lies the mortal remains of Lieut. Robert Thorp, who gave his life for the Kashmiris\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
For centuries, Kashmiris, generation after generation, have witnessed enormous suffering at the hands of outsiders who have conquered and ruled the region one after the other. Be they Afghans, Sikhs, Mughals, or Dogras, every successive ruler has left a deeply troubled legacy in the history of Kashmir. C. E. Tyndale-Biscoe, while mentioning the long historical experience of conquest and oppression endured by the Kashmiris, writes: \u201cIt is quite possible that if we Britishers had had to undergo what the Kashmiris have suffered in the past we might have lost our manhood.\u201d<\/p>\n
Likewise, other historians have noted that these foreign rulers have, in most cases, been uncouth and oppressive. However, what Indian rule has meant for Kashmir and the Kashmiris during its decades-long presence in the region is something that, according to many observers, finds little precedent in the region\u2019s modern history. Its imperialistic presence in the region is widely criticized as a major cause of human-rights violations, as well as a persistent challenge to peace and security in the region.<\/p>\n
