Islamabad: The Jammu Kashmir United Council (JKUC), Jammu & Kashmir Freedom Movement (JKFM) and Global Peace Movement Jammu Kashmir (GPJK) have said the continued validity of United Nations Map No. 4668 reaffirms the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir and does not endorse India\u2019s unilateral claims over the territory.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a joint statement, the organizations welcomed the September 4, 2026 adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of Resolution A\/RES\/80\/307, saying the resolution made no change to the UN\u2019s established cartographic treatment of Jammu and Kashmir. The General Assembly adopted the resolution by 164 votes in favour, one against and six abstentions.<\/p>\n
The resolution, titled \u201cCorrect the map: rebalancing global cartographic representation and promoting equitable representation of the world\u2019s regions, particularly Africa\u201d, primarily concerns global map projections and encourages the use of equal-area projections where appropriate. It does not alter territorial status, sovereignty or existing boundary arrangements.<\/p>\n
The JKUC, JKFM and GPJK said the UN\u2019s continued use of Map No. 4668, published by the UN Geospatial Information Section, remains significant for Kashmir because the map identifies the territory as disputed and states that \u201cThe final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been agreed upon by the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
They said the map depicts the Line of Control as a dotted line rather than an international boundary, maintaining the UN\u2019s distinction between the Line of Control and an internationally recognized border.<\/p>\n
The organizations said the UN\u2019s cartographic treatment also demonstrates that India\u2019s unilateral constitutional measures cannot by themselves settle the internationally disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
They urged the international community to press India to align its official maps concerning Jammu and Kashmir with the UN\u2019s established cartographic position and to pursue a settlement of the dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.<\/p>\n
The groups said the continued UN treatment of Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory demonstrates that the dispute remains unresolved and cannot be extinguished through unilateral political or cartographic measures.<\/p>\n
They called upon India to abandon \u201cunconstitutional and inhuman measures\u201d in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the dispute.<\/p>\n
The organizations further urged India to respect the longstanding commitments associated with the Kashmir dispute and to take steps towards a settlement that addresses the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.<\/p>\n
