New Delhi : Authorities have imposed widespread restrictions and deployed more than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel across New Delhi and adjoining areas ahead of a protest called by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party today.<\/p>\n
According to Kashmir Media Service, the CJP has announced that it will hold a \u201cLehra Do Tiranga\u201d demonstration at Connaught Place at 5 pm on Friday, calling on participants to wave the Indian national flag.<\/p>\n
The party has called the protest to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which critics say has disenfranchised millions of people. Critics have also said that the deletions have disproportionately affected minorities, particularly Muslims.<\/p>\n
The latest protest call also comes in response to the arrests of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka earlier this week.<\/p>\n
With Jantar Mantar no longer designated as a protest site, the party has called for a gathering at Central Park in Connaught Place. Neha Bora of the All India Students\u2019 Association and the Aam Aadmi Party are also expected to participate.<\/p>\n
Massive security deployment<\/strong><\/p>\n More than 6,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around Connaught Place, the Hindustan Times reported.<\/p>\n This is in addition to the 26,000 personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) already deployed in central Delhi over the past week amid protests by the CJP, Opposition parties, Left groups and the civil society organizations demanding Kumar\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n Protests against the CEC have been held in Delhi and other parts of India since October 2 over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the SIR exercise.<\/p>\n The deployment of central police forces is among the largest in the Indian capital since the 2020 riots in northeastern Delhi, the Hindustan Times quoted an unidentified police officer as saying.<\/p>\n Restrictions across Central Delhi<\/strong><\/p>\n Barricades have been installed along roads near Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, ITO and Sansad Marg, the newspaper reported. Additional surveillance cameras have also been installed at Central Park and the Rajiv Chowk metro station in Connaught Place.<\/p>\n An order prohibiting gatherings of four or more persons was also in force in central Delhi.<\/p>\n The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) announced that Central Park in Connaught Place would remain closed on Friday and Saturday \u201cfor administrative reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n CJP founder defiant ahead of protest<\/strong><\/p>\n Earlier on Thursday, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said he was undeterred despite the possibility of being arrested ahead of today\u2019s protest.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy are you so afraid of cockroaches?\u201d Dipke said.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to tell Narendra Modi that we are not afraid\u2026 if waving the Indian national flag lands you in jail, we are ready,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" New Delhi : Authorities have imposed widespread restrictions and deployed more than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel across New Delhi and adjoining areas ahead of a protest called by the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party today.
