Srinagar, June 29 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the joint resistance leadership has condemned as political vendetta the fresh arrest spree unleashed by Indian forces against Hurriyat leaders, activists and youth across the Valley and has termed the arrests as arm-twisting methods.

The leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in a joint statement issued in Srinagar also rejected the declaration of Hizbul Mujahideen Chief, Syed Salahuddin, as a ‘global terrorist’ by the United States terming it as highly unjustifiable and regrettable act.

“Delhi is leaving no stone unturned to crush every voice raised in the valley expressing Kashmiri people’s sentiment and aspirations,” the leadership said. The joint statement condemned the arrests of Altaf Ahmad Shah, Ayaz Muhammad Akbar and Merajud Din Kalwal.

The leadership said that branding Syed Salahuddin as ‘terrorist’ by the US administration was highly unjustifiable and regrettable. They said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are peacefully engaged in their struggle for freedom from Indian occupation for the last 70 years and demand the right to self-determination as promised to them by UN and supported by US, UK and the world community.

They said the international community including the US is duty-bound to honor the commitment made to the people of Kashmir by granting them the right of self-determination and settle the dispute “which is bleeding Kashmiris each day and has led to their genocide under brutal Indian occupation and has made J&K the world’s highest militarized zone with over eight lakh Indian forces stationed here to keep the people captive”.

Gilani, Mirwaiz and Malik said the people of J&K have pinned their hope on the international community, which has acknowledged and backed their legitimate right to self-determination in accordance with the internationally accepted democratic norms and justice.

“As a reaction to international inaction in resolving this dispute, the innocent people are feeling pushed to the wall and some took to arms to fight this brutal military repression and illegal occupation of their land,” they said.
The leadership said the US has targeted a veteran freedom fighter, which is unfortunate adding that declaring a Kashmiri freedom fighter as terrorist will not resolve the Kashmir dispute or bring peace.

“What it can do is embolden Indian government to further suppress Kashmiris and further increase the level of human rights violations committed against them by its armed forces,” they said.

“While the US claims to espouse and stand for democratic principles of liberty and justice, how can it turn a blind eye to India’s brazen violation in this part of the world? What kind of double standard and opportunism is the US exhibiting especially when it has always acknowledged that the dispute of Kashmir has to be resolved for peace and stability of the region and has in fact many times offered mediation between India and Pakistan over its resolution?”

The leaders said Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory, which was occupied by India illegally in 1947. They said, “Since the people of Kashmir are peacefully engaged in their struggle for freedom through self-determination as promised to them by the United Nations and supported by the US, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world community.”

The statement said the people of Kashmir hope that the international community, which has acknowledged and backed their legitimate right to self-determination in accordance with internationally accepted democratic norms and justice, will always support their just struggle and eventually truth and justice will prevail.”

The leaders said that some youth took guns during 1989-90 in a reaction to international inaction in resolving the dispute despite commitments and even after witnessing unprecedented oppression against the innocent people. The statement said, “After feeling being pushed to the wall, some people took to arms to fight this brutal military repression and illegal occupation of their land, as a way to achieve freedom for it”.

APHC leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah said freedom movement in Jammu and Kashmir does not need anyone’s certificate saying that instead of coming to the rescue of oppressed nations the US is backing the very people who are infamous for unleashing the state-sponsored terrorism in their occupied territories.”

Syed Agha Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi described as completely unjustified the US designation of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin as a ‘global terrorist’ and said that such steps would prove counterproductive for just Kashmir freedom movement. He said India has been inflicting brutalities upon the people of Kashmir.

Dukhtaran-e-Millat in its statement said, “Syed Salahuddin is a Kashmiri and it is his religious obligation to fight for his people who have been enslaved.”

Tehreek-e-Mazahmat Chairman, Bilal Siddiqee and Hurriyat leader Javed Ahmad Mir in their statements said UN Resolution under Definition of Aggression allows armed struggle for nations fighting in defense and for maintaining identity. Jammu and Kashmir Mass Movement Chairperson Zamrooda Habib in her statement deplored the US State Department’s statement.
