Srinagar, October 13 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, members of a civil society group held a sit-in at Pratap Park in Srinagar against the increasing braid-chopping incidents.

The sit-in was held under the banner of Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS). The protestors carried placards that read “braid-chopping is shameful on the part of perpetrators”.

Talking to reporters, civil society member, Shakeel Qalander denounced the authorities for their shoddy investigation and for making contradictory statements on braid-chopping. He termed the braid-chopping as an act of terror.

He said that it was quite unfortunate that the authorities were still clueless. “More than 100 incidents have been reported. Society feels that the braid-chopping is an attack on the honour and dignity of the society. No society can see its womenfolk living in fear,” he added.

Renowned pediatrician, Dr Altaf Hussain, said that braid-chopping was a grave human rights violation. “It is an act of terror, an assault on the dignity, honour, and chastity of our womenfolk. The authorities have to unravel the mystery behind the braid-chopping incidents,” he added.

Prominent columnist, Zareef Ahmad Zareef, said that it was being done to divert people’s attention from the ongoing freedom movement. “Braid-chopping is also a mischief. In the past, we have witnessed many similar conspiracies,” he said.

Journalist, Anuradha Bhasin, said, “People in Kashmir suspect some agencies are behind braid-chopping. This suspicion is growing with each passing day. People in Kashmir have been given a feeling that New Delhi looks at them with so much of contempt that braid-chopping seems to be another weapon they are being attacked with.”
