Locals catch braid-chopper soldier in Kupwara

Srinagar, October 17 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, fresh incidents of braid chopping in Srinagar, Pulwama, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts triggered protests, clashes and shutdown in different areas of the Valley, today.

Protesters, mostly women, blocked Bandipora-Srinagar highway against a braid chopping incident in Panzinara area of Srinagar. The protests disrupted traffic for several hours. The protesters raised slogans demanding arrest of the culprits. Clashes were reported from Rambagh after braid of a local woman was found chopped off. The protesters blocked main road, which disturbed vehicular movement. Indian police used brute force and fired teargas shells on the protesters.

Meanwhile, shutdown was observed in Pulwama district against a fresh braid-chopping incident in the town. Hair of a 50 year old woman were chopped off in Dangerpora area of the district, last night. Shopkeepers downed their shutters in protest against the incident.

A braid-cutting incident was also reported from Narvaw area of Baramulla district. Braid of a mother of two children was chopped off when she went to washroom, situated outside of her house in Pehliharn village of Narvaw. The family got a case registered against unknown braid choppers in nearby police station.

Clashes broke out between Indian police and protesters at Reddi Chowkibal and Kralpora areas of Kupwara district, today, after a woman’s braid was chopped off. Locals caught hold of a Territorial Army man involved in the braid-chopping incident. The soldier was severely thrashed by the locals. However, he was rescued by the Indian army and police. The incident triggered massive protests in the area. The forces’ personnel lobbed teargas shells, while protesters pelted stones on them. Traders in Kralpora closed shops in protest.

On the other hand, Traders Federation and Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), Bandipora, took out a protest rally against the growing incidents of braid chopping across the Valley. Carrying placards, the protestors marched from Nowpora to Gulshan Chowk, Bandipora.

It is to mention here that over 350 incidents of braid chopping have occurred in the occupied territory during last one month but not a single culprit has been arrested so far.
