JRL terms extension as political vendetta

New Delhi, October 17 (KMS): A Delhi court, today, extended till November 14 the judicial custody of illegally detained seven Hurriyat leaders arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in false cases registered against them.

During the in-camera proceedings, District Judge Poonam Bamba extended the judicial custody of resistance leaders, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Merajuddin Kalwal, Peer Saifullah, Shahid-ul-Islam, Ayaz Muhammad Akbar, Farooq Ahmad Dar and Nayeem Ahmed Khan. The NIA had arrested these leaders on July 24.

Meanwhile, the court also extended judicial custody of a Kashmiri businessman, Zahoor Ahmad Watali, and two youth including Javed Ahmad Butt and Kamran Yousuf (a photojournalist) of Pulwama for 30 days.

The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, in a statement issued in Srinagar denounced the extension in the detention and termed it as political vendetta. The resistance leaders also expressed serious concern over the deteriorating health of illegally detained senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail. They said that illegal detention and other tactics could not suppress the resolve of the Hurriyat leaders towards the ongoing freedom movement.
