JRL calls for complete shutdown tomorrow

Srinagar, October 20 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, people including women staged massive demonstrations across the territory, today, to protest against the incessant braid-chopping incidents. Several people sustained injures due to the use of brute force by Indian police and troops on the protesters.

Call for the demonstrations was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. The puppet authorities imposed restrictions in Srinagar and sealed Jamia Masjid on the fourth consecutive week, disallowing the Juma prayers at the historic mosque.

People including women and children took to the streets in Srinagar, Badgam, Ganderbal, Bandipore, Hajin, Islamabad, Sopore, Shopian, Kulgam, Tral, Pulwama and other areas. The protesters were led by Hurriyat leaders including Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Hakeem Abdur Rasheed, Bashir Ahmad Qureshi, Nisar Hussain Rather, Bashir Ahmad Irfani, Mushtaq Ahmed Sufi and Sheikh Abdur Rasheed. Raising high-pitched pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the protesters demanded of the puppet administration to expose the culprits of the attacks on women. The protesters termed the braid-chopping spree as a well-thought-out conspiracy masterminded by the Indian agencies to create a sense of insecurity and fear-psychosis among the masses particularly womenfolk. Indian police and troops fired pellets and teargas shells to disperse the protesters in Srinagar, Hajin and other areas, injuring many of them.

The puppet authorities put Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention and arrested Qazi Yasir besides keeping Syed Ali Gilani under house arrest. The actions were aimed at preventing the leaders from leading the demonstrations. The Mirwaiz was also scheduled to visit Charar-e-Sharif area of Budgam and address a public gathering there.

The Joint Resistance Leadership in a statement issued after a meeting of Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar and Muhammad Yasin Malik in Srinagar, last evening, called for complete shutdown and appealed to the people to observe civil curfew, tomorrow, to register protest against the unabated disgraceful acts of braid chopping.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Hazratbal and Hajin areas against incessant braid-cutting incidents and brutalities of Indian troops on the residents.

The right eye of an eleventh class student, Wahid Manzoor, was damaged after he was hit by the pellets fired by Indian police in Srinagar. The incident occurred when a group of youth was chasing two braid choppers and the police fired pellets on them near Dal Lake.
