Brussels, November 14 (KMS): A three-member team of Jammu and Kashmir Self-Determination Movement International (JKSDMI) visited the European Parliament and met members of the European Parliament (MEPs), especially friends associated with Kashmir Group and leaders from various parliamentary groups.

Wajid Khan, MEP, welcomed the team and his office provided all the facilities during the visit and arranged various meetings.

Following is the text of the statement issued from the office of Jammu and Kashmir Self Determination Movement International (JKSDMI):

“Our first meeting was the Jammu Martyrs Day commemoration in the local restaurant, which was attended by the Chairperson Friends of Kashmir Group in the European Parliament, Anthea McIntyre MEP, Julie Ward MEP, Wajid Khan MEP, Dr Manzoor Illahi Member Parliament of Brussels, Sardar Sadiq Khan, Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood Joshi, local Pakistani media and staff members of the MEPs.

The function was chaired by Raja Najabat Hussain and chief guest was Anthea McIntyre MEP. All the participants paid tributes to the martyrs of Jammu on their sacrifices and promised to raise the issue of Kashmir at the International level.

Raja Najabat Hussain thanked MEPs for raising the voice for the suffering people of Jammu and Kashmir and apprised them of the latest situation in occupied Kashmir. He briefed the attendees on the activities of British Parliament and praised the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir in the British Parliament for regularly raising the Kashmir issue. We are especially grateful to the Kashmir debate on January 19, and recent declaration of the parliamentary enquiry, to gather evidence from witnesses, starting on 14th December on human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, he added.

Raja Najabat Hussain announced the future activities of his organisation in the European Union for the next twelve months because of Britain leaving the EU, and the Kashmiris’ need for support from the other twenty seven European countries, including the need to have onboard the support of the MEPs of these nations within the European Parliament.

He announced that JKSDMI will target the whole of 2018 in Europe and it will organise seminars and conferences in every capital and big city with the support of local communities and organisations.

Anthea McIntyre said, Kashmiri people have full right to get their right of self-determination and human rights abuses must be stopped in occupied Kashmir, and that Indian forces’ personnel must be punished to give justice to the Kashmiri victims. She assured the JKSDMI team and the whole Kashmiri population that she will work hard along with her co-chairperson from the Labour party Richard Corbett MEP inside the parliament and also requested that the governments in Pakistan and India give them the opportunity for meetings with Kashmiris and their leadership on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC).

On 7th November, the team attended the Conference organised by MEP Amjad Bashir on the subject of women and Islam in the European Parliament. JKSDMI team had a very constructive meeting with newly elected Leader of the Labour group in the European Parliament, Richard Corbett MEP, in his office, where they discussed the future activities of friends of Kashmir Group, as well as JKSDMI in Yorkshire and European parliament.

Richard Corbett praised the efforts of the JKSDMI team and Raja Najabat Hussain as well as agreed to work with Anthea McIntyre. The JKSDMI team met with the newly elected Pakistani origin Scottish MEP from the conservative party Baroness Nosheena Mobarik, Dr Syed Kamal, Amjad Bashir, Green Party from London Jean Lambert MEP head of the delegation for South Asia in the European Parliament as well as MEPs form Germany and Italy.

The JKSDMI team along with Wajid Khan met with various delegations of Middle Eastern countries and ambassadors who were at the Conference including the Pakistani Ambassador Ms Naghmana Hashmi. On conclusion of the meetings, the JKSDMI team made up the following programme for activities both in the UK and the European Parliament for December 2017 and January 2018.

Our two days lobby will take place in the European Parliament on 4th and 5th December to encourage MEPs from all the twenty seven remaining European countries to join the friends of Kashmir Group with the support of Amjad Bashir and Wajid Khan. “We will start Human Rights Week from Sunday 10th December, International Human Rights Day, will be observed in Bradford in the presence of Richard Corbett MEP, Naz Shah MP, Judith Cummins MP and Amjad Bashir MEP along with a parliamentary delegation from Pakistan,” the statement said.

“We will have meetings all over the UK, but the final event will be in Birmingham on Monday 18th December which is the death anniversary of the late Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas and which will be attended by Anthea McIntyre, Chairperson Friends of Kashmir in European Parliament and local MPs as well as the mayor of West Midlands Andy Street CBE,” it said.

JKSDMI will organise meetings in Bristol, Nottingham, Accrington, Bolton, Ashton and London House of Commons as well,” the statement added.
