Over 900 Kashmiri prisoners lodged in various jails

Srinagar, December 05 (KMS): The recent incident of thrashing of 18 detainees in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail has made the families of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in the jail worried about their safety.

Assabah Khan, the wife of a resistance leader, Farooq Ahmad Dar, who is lodged in Tihar jail told media in Srinagar, “We are extremely worried after the recent brutal assault on inmates in the jail.” She said that during a meeting with her husband at Tihar jail last week, she handed over a few blankets and warm clothes to him, but she came to know that Kashmiri prisoners were forced to sleep on floor and were denied all facilities including medical care.” Assabah Khan said the condition of all Kashmiri prisoners lodged in Tihar Jail is pathetic.

“According to jail manual, relations can speak over phone for five minutes, but a few days back when I spoke to my husband, the phone got disconnected within two minutes. My husband falls in high risk prisoners’ zone. I recently took a blanket for him and that was torn apart by the jail staff on the pretext that there may be something hidden in it,” Assabah Khan added.

It is pertinent to mention here that Indian official data had confirmed that more than 900 Kashmiris are languishing in various jails of occupied Kashmir and India and of them 42 are facing life sentence while 298 have been booked under draconian law, Public Safety Act.

In Jammu region, 200 prisoners are lodged in Kot Bhalwal jail, 90 in Kathua jail, 10 in Udhampur jail, five in Amphala jail, five in Hiranagar jail and six in Rajouri jail, the data said. Five inmates are detained in Reasi jail and 10 in Poonch jail in Jammu, it added.

The data disclosed that in the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar Central Jail tops the list with 300 prisoners. There are 15 prisoners lodged in Baramulla sub-jail, 30 in Kupwara jail and 18 in Mattan jail in Islamabad district, it said. Besides, 147 people were lodged in various police stations across Jammu and Kashmir.

The data revealed that at least 48 Kashmiri prisoners are lodged in New Delhi’s Tihar jail – where 18 inmates were thrashed recently. The detainees include Hurriyat leaders Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Peer Saifullah, Muhammad Altaf Shah, Ayaz Muhammad Akbar, Merajuddin Kalwal, Ghulam Muhammad Butt, Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Ahmed Khan and Farooq Ahmed Dar.
