Srinagar, August 26 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Coordination Committee (JKCSCC), a civil society group, has warned of mass agitation if Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution, which grants special rights and privileges to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir, is repealed.

The BJP government in New Delhi is attempting to abrogate the Article 35-A. Indian Supreme Court will be hearing the petitions seeking repeal of the constitutional provision on 31st August.

The JKCSCC members including Muzaffar Shah and Suhail Kazmi addressing a press conference in Srinagar said that a mass uprising would be launched in the occupied territory if the Article 35 was revoked.

They said that the constitutional provision was an issue of the identity and dignity of the people of Kashmir and it was the duty of every citizen to protect it.

Suhail Kazmi, a JKCSCC from Jammu said, “The people of Jammu region will bear the maximum impact if the Article 35-A was done away with. We are with the people of Kashmir Valley to safeguard it. The people of Jammu want Article 35-A and Article 370 to remain intact,” he added.

It is to mention here that the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has called for complete shutdown on August 30 and 31 in the territory to register protest against the onslaught on the Article 35-A.
